When you think of an ordinary light bulb, what comes to mind?  The answer is probably this:  an incandescent light bulb.  These light bulbs have small wires and a filament that are enclosed with round, clear glass and have a metal base with screw threads.  They produce light through the heating of the filament.  You’ve seen hundreds of them during your life.

Well your image of light bulbs is about to change…

As of January 1, 2014, manufacturers are prohibited from manufacturing most incandescent light bulbs.

In 2007, President George W. Bush signed into law an energy bill that require light bulb manufacturers to phase out production of incandescent light bulbs as follows:

  • January 1, 2012:  100 Watt Incandescent Bulbs are Phased Out
  • January 1, 2013:  75 Watt Incandescent Bulbs are Phased Out
  • January 1, 2014:  40 & 60 Watt Incandescent Bulbs are Phased Out
